Week 1 (September 14th)
Launch: Looking at US currency. Observation, analysis, discussion, mini- presentations.
Mini research project of the men that are currently on the one, five, ten, twenty, fifty, and hundred dollar bills. Students to research the who, what where, when, and why facts of the these men, and identify the contributions that each made to American history.
Mini research project of famous American Women; Eleanor Roosevelt, Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Sacagawea, Susan B Anthony, and Jane Addams. Students to identify main ideas and supporting details to describe and define the contributions each woman has made to U.S. history. Small group activity that will culminate in a presentation to the other students in the class. (RI1, W.7, SL.1)
Week 2 (September 21st)
Group presentations of historical figure to classmates. Classmates to record notes on a main idea, supporting detail note taking sheet. (SL.4, SL.5)
Week 3 (Septmeber 28th)
Mini lessons:
Symbols: American Flag as a symbol of freedom activity; People as symbols
Students to select one woman from history to write an argument that persuades the reader to believe in their selection of a woman to symbolize American values on American currency.( SL.3)
Week 4 (October 5th)
Begin Argument writing
Mini lessons in opinion vs. perspective
Critical lenses for perspective (Freedom, Bravery, Service to others, Leaders of Change, Equality, Independence)
Supporting perspective with relevant evidence. (W.1)
Research: Main Ideas and supporting details to make an argument (RI.1)
Week 5 (October 14th)
Persuasive technique: Mini Lessons on persuasive language, Recognizing persuasive language in reading , short film clips, advertising (RI.7)
Incorporating persuasive technique in writing (W.1)
Revising to incorporate persuasive language ( W.5)
Week 6 (October 19th)
Final edit of argument. (W.5)
